TATTOO BOOKS FROM ACADEMIA

Bodies of Inscription: A Cultural History of the Modern Tatttoo Community

I liked the contrast between the old time tattooers that were interviewed and the tone of the new tattooed "community." More of an academic read.

The Body Aesthetic: From Fine Art to Body Modification

Another academic treatise but this time from the aspect of the body in artwork and as artwork.

Bodies of Subversion: A Secret History of Women and Tattoo

A nice take on why and how women have used their bodies to take control of their lives.

Tattooed: The Sociogenesis of a Body Art

This is very likely one of those books only an academic (or ex-academic like me) would buy (which I did, and also read it).

In the Flesh: The Cultural Politics of Body Modification

Don't have this one yet.

Tattoo, Torture, Mutilation, and Adornment: The Denaturalization of the Body in Culture and Text

I know I need to get this but I also know it's going to be an academic read with not much about tattoos.

Spiritual Tattoo : A Cultural History of Tattooing, Piercing, Scarification, Branding, and Implants

Don't have this one yet -- my checkbook and I can't keep up!

Written on the Body

Another academic anthology on tattooing -- I've read it (feeling compelled to do so) but think it might be a bit dry for most readers.

Maori Tattooing

A blast from the 19th century past, as it was originally published in 1896.

Tattoo : An Anthropology

Don't have this one yet -- my checkbook and I can't keep up!

Tattoo: Bodies, Art, And Exchange In The Pacific And The West

Don't have this one yet -- my checkbook and I can't keep up!

Marks of Civilization

An academic read from twenty years ago but it stands as one of the first, still has relevant data, and it comes from my alma mater!
