More Tattoo Symbols and Their Symbolism
| This month’s tattoo symbol is an astronomical tattoo as well as an astrological one. People familiar with the signs of the zodiac will likely recognize the left-hand symbol in the tattoo below. It is the upward pointing arrow that represents the astrological sign of Sagittarius, the archer. It is, in fact, not really just an arrow, but rather a bow and arrow and a symbol that has been used in horoscopes since ancient Greece. |
The sun enters the sign of Sagittarius around November 22nd and exits around December 21st, just before the winter solstice and the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere–an auspicious time indeed. Many archaeological sites throughout the world have monuments or architecture that capitalize on the alignment of the sun on this day. The archer, often depicted as a centaur in the act of drawing the bow, is one of the fire signs of the zodiac, along with Aries and Leo. Horoscopes that are dominated by fire signs are believed to endow people born in them with creativity, flexibility, and adaptability while preserving belief in the possibilities of what might be attainable. Interestingly, the symbol to the right of Sagittarius, looking like a stylized number four, is the astronomical symbol for Jupiter, the planet that rules the sign of the archer. Jupiter’s strong influence on Sagittarians can be summed up with the word expansion: expanding knowledge, expanding empathy, and expanding influence. The expansion of influence is often associated with leadership roles for these people, since Jupiter is not only a planet, he is the highest of the Roman gods, and their ruler. Often people will use their astrological sign as a sort of visual shorthand that describes how they see themselves. In the case of Sagittarians, especially under the influence of Jupiter, people who sport the two tattoos might characterize themselves as guardians and protectors, people more interested in the possibilities for the spread of justice and higher ideals than in any gain for themselves.
