| Virgo Tattoo - Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac (August 23rd to September 22nd), occurring just before the equinox that marks the beginning of fall. The name derives from the Latin for virgin. Not surprisingly then, the pictorial sign for Virgo is often a young and beautiful maiden. Also not surprising, for the time of year, this virgin is sometimes associated with the harvest and even fertility. According to astrologists, people born during this astronomical period are modest and analytical, but can become overly critical and worriers, in extreme cases. Astrology and astronomy unite throughout the calendar year to produce these types of character and life descriptions. In the modern world, astronomy deals strictly with the scientific study of outer space. However 6,000 years ago (in Mesopotamia), the observation of stars and the observation of people went hand in hand and were considered a single science. The changing position of points of light in the sky were directly related by early observers to their own lives, down to the details of their personalities and their daily routines. For astrology adherents today, who want to express something personal in terms of an image, the choices are always two -- either the pictorial symbol (the young maiden for Virgo, for example) or the glyph. The glyph for Virgo appears as a sort of stylized "M", which may be related to the Hebrew letter "mem" (the M shape) combined with the Phoenician symbol for fish at the end (as though the rounded head were pointed up and the crossed tail pointed down). Early on this glyph became associated with water, fish, and, in developing Christianity, with Jesus and his virginal birth. Despite rejection by various empirical sciences, astrology continues to thrive worldwide and resonates with millions. In tattoo artwork, astrology symbols also have the added benefit of being an alternative to the "name game" (getting a tattoo of someone's name). Most often though, people use these symbols to represent themselves, as a type of shorthand for the qualities associated with them. Larger View |
